Typically, artwork and photographs look best when hung at the eye-level of the average person in the room. A good rule of thumb is 57” on center (the middle of the artwork is 57” from the floor). In a room where more time is spent seated, such as the living room, eye-level or lower would be the optimal position to hang your custom frame. We are always available in-store to provide you with tips and tricks and the correct hanging hardware for your new frame.
When deciding where to hang artwork, we recommend hanging smaller, more detailed pieces in small spaces like hallways. This allows the artwork or photos to be enjoyed up close and personal. Hang large and eccentric pieces opposite the entrance to a room or on any large wall space. This positioning allows the viewer to stand back and enjoy the artwork or print.
The mat is an important part of any custom framing process. The mat is the border that surrounds your degree, license, picture, or art within its frame. Choosing your mat is an important and fun part of the framing process. Matboards can bring out the colors in a piece, accent its shape, and draw attention to the piece. We offer matboards in hundreds of colors so you’re guaranteed to find that you love. We can also suggest and recommend mats that will give your frame even more style! Matting also prevents condensation from forming behind the glass by keeping the glass from coming into contact with a piece and allowing air to circulate. Moisture is your art or photo’s worst enemy! Moisture can damage your artwork and photographs and also serves as a breeding ground for mildew or mold. You can tell when a piece has been framed without a mat because the photo or artwork will buckle, wrinkle, or stick to the glass it’s behind.
The art of canvas stretching requires precision and time. You cannot simply lay canvas across some boards and staple it. Canvas stretching allows a person to stretch an image to precise dimensions and shapes, protect the image from aging, give the image a firm foundation, and achieve perfect and permanent image alignment. We offer canvas stretching services at Cleveland Custom Frames so that you can showcase an image for generations to come.
When canvas stretching, we use stretching tools to stretch an image over stretcher bars, wooden pieces that make up the frame that supports the canvas from behind. Other tools that we use during this process include a mallet, stretching pliers, measuring tape, hammer, staple remover, and many more. These tools allow us to very gently yet firmly and uniformly pull the canvas and align it perfectly with the stretcher bars. You can tell when canvas has been improperly stretched because it will have unsightly waves that become more pronounced over time. Properly stretched canvas will appear taut with perfectly folded and affixed corners. Stretching a canvas is a time-consuming process, but the finished product is beautiful and amazing. If you have a canvas image that you’d like to last for generations, bring it on down to our store and we will professionally stretch it.
We carry frames that come in a variety of finishes which may be damaged by chemicals and cleaning agents. We dusting your frame regularly and using filtered water with a soft microfiber cloth when the frame requires more extensive cleaning. Avoid spraying water directly onto the frame’s surface and always test on a small area of the frame before cleaning the entire frame.
